See the island from the water on a traditional fishing boat. Captain Nikos and his daughter Marina will guide us on an excursion where we learn to catch fish in the traditional way. We will also snorkel in crystal clear waters and dine upon the fresh catch.
The traditional fishing boat "Panayia" ("Virgin Mary") is captained by Nikos Malamatenios, who is one of the featured captains in the video below. He shares his craft with us as we learn to share in the abundance of the sea.
"The captain’s boat is a spacious 49’ custom made vessel. The boat accommodates up to 12 guests. She’s equipped with all necessary navigational and safety gear and features a private toilet, shower, and a kitchen.
You’ll go fishing with rods or nets if the weather allows it. Captain Nikitas always runs his trips in the nearshore waters, so you can expect feistier fish as well. You’ll target Common Pandora, Tuna, Scallops, Crabs, and many more. If it’s not too windy, you can also try drift fishing.
If you get tired of fishing and want to try something else, there is always the opportunity for swimming at the most beautiful beaches in Paros. Snorkeling equipment is included. Finally, he prepares the fresh catch and other Greek dishes and we all dine together on the boat."
"They are the last of their kind.
They are threatened with extinction.
The photo documentary LUPIMARIS is dedicated to the history, the stories and the faces of the Greek [Parian] fishermen and their traditional colourful wooden boats."
